How Take-Home Pay Is Calculated
🏛️
Federal Income Tax
The US uses progressive brackets from 10% to 37%. You only pay each rate on income within that bracket — your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate. The 2025 standard deduction is $15,000 (single) or $30,000 (married).
🗺️
State Income Tax
9 states have zero income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Other states range from 2.5% (Arizona) to 13.3% (California top bracket). This calculator uses 2025 rates for all 50 states.
💼
Pre-Tax Deductions
Contributions to 401(k), HSA and health insurance premiums reduce your taxable income before taxes are applied. This means a $6,000 401(k) contribution saves you more than $6,000 out of pocket — the actual cost is reduced by your marginal tax rate.
Disclaimer: Estimates only. Based on 2025 IRS brackets and approximate state rates. Actual withholding depends on your W-4, local taxes, and employer plan specifics. Not financial or tax advice — consult a CPA for your specific situation.
